This latest video by Vox explores Sarah Gordon’s Indecent Exposures: Eadweard Muybridge’s “Animal Locomotion” Nudes, and how the first nude movies were produced back in 1887.

Muybridge started out as a photographer, focusing on animals for his early motion studies. When he moved to Philadelphaia, he got elites to back his study of humans, both clothed and unclothed.

Although Muybridge did not use film, he captures photographs in still plates and displayed them in public. By projecting them in a series of sequence, he turns them into kinetic images that portray nudity in the Victorian era.
